A couple in California has been charged with the murder and torture of an eight-year-old girl, who was found dead in a hotel bathtub with severe injuries. Genesis Ariah Mata was discovered in a room in Bakersfield on August 2, with substantial trauma to her body, including burns, blisters, and a crushed hand.
Ray Mata Jr, 31, and Graciela Bustamonte, 27, have pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, willful cruelty to a child, and torture. According to a probable cause document, the couple allegedly poured boiling water on the girl and repeatedly slammed her fingers in a door frame, causing her fingernails to separate.
A police officer at the scene described extensive injuries, including large blisters and burns over her body and face, and skin splitting. The officer noted the injuries appeared consistent with repeated whipping. Both suspects allegedly blamed each other but admitted to participating in the abuse.
Bustamonte reportedly told police that Genesis died on Friday night, a day before emergency services were called. She claimed she saw Mata punching and suffocating the girl and that he had beaten his children for years with hangers, wires, and a charging cord. Bustamonte also admitted it was her idea to pour scalding water on her stepdaughter to make her 'listen' better.
Genesis' family has criticised Child Protective Services (CPS), claiming they were contacted at least 20 times about the alleged abuse. School staff also reported the children missing school and having visible bruises. CPS has not commented on the claims. A fundraiser described Genesis as a 'beautiful spirit' who 'loved anything that sparkled'.
