Can a viral TikTok skincare ingredient, bottled by one of the most popular budget beauty brands, genuinely restore lost facial volume? That was the question beauty editor Sabine Wiesel set out to answer when she got an exclusive early sample of The Ordinary's new volufiline 92% + pal-isoleucine 1% serum.
The Hype Behind 'Filler in a Bottle'
Launched on Thursday 4 December 2025, the serum brings the buzzy ingredient volufiline into the mainstream. Previously, this molecule—a fusion of plant extracts also known as sarsasapogenin—was a rare find in skincare. Its reputation as a 'filler-in-a-bottle' stems from claims it can stimulate lipid storage, potentially increasing volume in areas like the under-eyes, cheeks, and temples.
Sabine Wiesel, a beauty journalist in her 40s who specialises in mature skincare, was eager to test it. "As someone who only sees sunken, dark under-eyes every time I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror, I couldn't wait to try it," she noted. The Ordinary, known for making innovative ingredients accessible, combined volufiline with pal-isoleucine to support collagen and elastin production for enhanced plumping.
Putting the Serum to the Test
Wiesel incorporated the serum into her morning and evening routine for a full month ahead of its public launch. She focused her application on targeted areas of volume loss: under the eyes, on the cheeks, and around smile lines.
She found the formulation required a careful hand. "Using it sparingly is key – it has a runny, oily consistency that can feel greasy on the skin if you use too much," she reported. The serum also delivered a tingling sensation, particularly under the eyes, which the brand states is normal. Unlike the DIY versions some beauty enthusiasts have created with raw volufiline, this ready-to-use formula from a trusted brand offers a safer, measured approach.
The Visible Results After One Month
Patience was essential. Wiesel emphasises that significant rejuvenation doesn't happen overnight. However, after consistent use for around four weeks, she observed clear changes.
The most noticeable difference was around her eyes. "My under eyes started to look plumper, with shadows less noticeable," she said. "Before use, I looked tired and sometimes even unwell. Now, I feel I look brighter and healthier."
She also saw improvements in her cheeks and smile lines. "My cheeks also look slightly plumper, and my smile lines somewhat softer, which is surprising in such a short amount of time," Wiesel added. While impressed, she cautions that topical skincare cannot replicate the dramatic effects of injectable dermal fillers.
Is It Worth the Investment?
Priced at just £15 at the time of writing, The Ordinary's volufiline serum represents a low-cost entry point for those curious about the ingredient. For Wiesel, it delivered value, particularly for addressing volume loss and dark circles associated with natural ageing in her 40s.
However, the formula may not suit all skin types. IndyBest colleague Lucy Smith, who tested it on her late-twenties oily skin, experienced blemishes and sensitivity. This suggests the serum could be better suited to more mature, drier complexions.
For anyone seeking an affordable, targeted treatment for early signs of volume loss, The Ordinary's latest offering provides a compelling, science-backed option. As with any new skincare, it's wise to manage expectations and introduce the product gradually to see how your skin responds.
