Television presenter Maya Jama has opened up about her personal fitness regime, highlighting one particular gentle workout that she never has to force herself to complete. The star, who recently travelled to film another series of Love Island: All Stars, discussed her demanding exercise schedule in a candid interview.

Maya Jama's Preferred Low-Impact Exercise

While Maya's typical sessions involve press-ups, burpees, cycling, and substantial weight training, there is one form of exercise that stands out as her favourite. That exercise is Pilates, a series of controlled and precise movements designed to strengthen and tone the body.

Why Pilates Works for Maya

"I do one-to-one sessions with Marsha Lindsay at Nobu London and it's great because it's a lighter workout but you're using every single muscle," Maya told Women's Health in 2024. "You can also do it at midday, and it doesn't leave you drenched with sweat."

She emphasised the unique appeal of this practice, stating, "It's the only form of exercise that I don't have to talk myself into doing, and that's a big thing for me!" Although Pilates is often confused with yoga, which tends to be slower and focused on holding positions, Pilates primarily concentrates on muscle toning and core strengthening.

Physical and Mental Health Benefits

Practising Pilates can be particularly valuable for individuals aiming to lose weight or sculpt their physique. Additionally, it may assist in managing specific medical conditions such as arthritis, scoliosis, and back pain. However, health professionals caution that more research is needed in this area, and it is advisable to consult a GP before undertaking such classes, especially if dealing with medical issues. "More research is needed, but there is some evidence to suggest that Pilates can be helpful for people who have lower back pain," the NHS explains.

Speaking in 2021, Maya elaborated on this connection: "I just think [working out] helps your mental health so much anyway – there's a difference in how I feel if I go out and do some exercise versus just staying in bed all day. I notice how it impacts my brain and how I'm feeling."
