Kundalini Awakening: The 'Spiritual Orgasm' Practice Trending Among Women

As someone who has always embraced alternative wellness approaches—from meditation and kinesiology to homeopathy and hypnosis—I consider myself open-minded. Yet, even I was intrigued when Kundalini activations began trending. This centuries-old spiritual practice, often dubbed a 'spiritual orgasm', has captured attention partly due to media personality Jackie Henderson, known as Jackie O.

Celebrity Endorsement and Personal Discovery

Jackie O, co-host of The Her Best Life podcast and the KIIS FM Kyle and Jackie O show, recently shared her candid experiences with Kundalini Awakening on an episode titled 'unexpected tears'. She detailed intense emotional releases, involuntary body movements, and a sense of letting go of buried pain. Her vulnerability resonated widely.

Interestingly, before hearing Jackie's story, I was introduced to Kundalini Activations by my friend Daniela Pola, a Sydney-based Reiki practitioner and lymphatic therapist. Daniela had discovered it accidentally after attending a group session in Sydney run by Lynsey Page, Jackie O's Kundalini coach. Her profound out-of-body experience led her to study and offer these sessions professionally.

Understanding Kundalini Energy

Daniela explains that Kundalini is an innate energy believed to reside at the base of the spine, linked to creativity, vitality, and emotional expression. 'For many people, this energy stays dormant,' she notes, 'not because anything is wrong, but because modern life keeps us stressed, busy, and disconnected from our bodies.'

Rooted in ancient Indian yogic and tantric traditions, Kundalini was traditionally awakened slowly through meditation and breathwork. Today, Kundalini Activation offers a modern, facilitated experience where participants lie down and allow the energy to evolve naturally, without forcing breath control or poses.

A First-Hand Experience of Emotional Release

Unlike Jackie O, who needed three sessions to feel shifts, my experience was immediate. Upon lying down with tribal music playing, tears flowed uncontrollably. Vivid images of past relationships and family moments flashed behind my closed eyes, akin to dreaming while awake.

Then, my body involuntarily took over—chest lifting, full-body convulsions, and heavy breathing through sobs. By the end, my abs burned as if from an intense workout. Daniela had warned that responses vary: sounds, movements, tears, or calm are all normal. After an hour, Reiki grounding left me feeling lighter yet foggy and drained.

The Science and Safety of Emotional Release

According to Daniela, emotional release in Kundalini isn't about reliving trauma but letting the body release stored stress. 'We don't just process life in our minds, we store it in our bodies,' she says. When the nervous system feels safe, tension can release through tears, shaking, laughter, or movement—or through deep calm for some.

While Kundalini is often described online as 'very intense', Daniela emphasises her non-forceful approach, meeting each person's energy where it's at. She also stresses that such practices should complement, not replace, professional medical or psychological care, advocating for holistic wellbeing.

Why Kundalini Is Gaining Popularity Now

Daniela believes the resurgence accelerated during COVID-19, when people were forced to pause. Combined with social media, burnout, and collective nervous system exhaustion, it appeals particularly to time-poor, overstimulated individuals. 'These practices don't require years of discipline,' she says, 'but they invite people to soften, surrender, and come back to themselves.'

Personal Reflections and Future Sessions

I booked a second session six weeks later, which felt completely different—focused on future thoughts rather than past rehashing, though tears flowed again. As someone avoidant by nature, these visceral responses felt like my body's way of surfacing suppressed emotions.

Ultimately, Kundalini isn't about believing in chakras or spiritual woo-woo. As Daniela puts it, 'Most of my clients don't believe in any of that stuff, they just know they want more.' Whether viewed as spiritual awakening or nervous-system regulation, it offers a profound path to emotional release.
