Hair Dye Mistake Adds Decades: Expert Warns Against Dark Colours for Thinning Hair
Hair dye mistake makes thinning hair look worse

A common error made when colouring thinning hair could be adding decades to your appearance, a leading specialist has warned. The instinctive choice to go darker often backfires, making hair look sparser instead of fuller.

The Colour Contrast That Ages You

Melik Yamur, a hair loss expert at the transplant clinic Now Hair Time, explains the visual pitfall. He states that darker shades create a stark contrast with the scalp, which can make partings appear significantly wider and expose more skin.

"A strong contrast between hair and scalp can make fine areas look even sparser, especially around the parting, ageing you by decades," Yamur told the Express. Many people choose deep tones hoping to add depth, but the result is the opposite, accentuating the very problem they wish to hide.

The Solution: Warmer, Lighter Tones

The expert's advice is clear: avoid dense, single-colour dye jobs, particularly from box dyes, which can leave hair looking flat and stringy. Instead, opt for slightly lighter or warmer tones to soften the contrast between hair and scalp.

"Opting for slightly lighter or warmer tones softens that contrast and creates the illusion of fuller, healthier hair," Yamur advises. He recommends asking your stylist to lighten your natural shade by just half to one tone for a subtle, effective change.

Strategic Colour Techniques for Volume

For the best results, dimensional colouring is key. Yamur emphasises techniques that use multiple tones to catch the light and build the appearance of thickness.

Multi-tonal colour, lowlights and gentle highlights can make a dramatic difference without a complete style overhaul. Strategically placed highlights around the face can draw attention away from sparser areas on the crown.

"Warmer, blended shades catch the light better, giving the appearance of increased volume and thickness," the expert concluded, offering a simple yet effective strategy for those experiencing natural hair thinning.
