After an intense gym session, some men notice their penis and testicles appear smaller or more retracted during and immediately after a workout — a phenomenon informally known as 'gym penis'. While it can be alarming, it is generally harmless and temporary.
What Causes 'Gym Penis'?
Dr Giuseppe Aragona, GP and medical adviser for Prescription Doctor, told Metro that while 'gym penis' is not a recognised medical diagnosis, it is something he has encountered before. He explained: 'It describes a temporary change in the appearance of the penis after exercise, particularly when someone has been doing strenuous cardiovascular exercise, weight training or exercising in a cold environment'.
The main reason, Dr Aragona added, is the way the body temporarily prioritises blood flow during exercise, along with changes in temperature and the contraction of smooth muscle and tissues around the penis. This combination can make the penis appear smaller or more retracted for a period of time.
How Long Does It Last?
There is no 'fixed amount of time that the body needs to “redistribute blood”,' Dr Aragona said. Most men should notice their penis return to normal once they have 'cooled down, stopped exercising, and their circulation and body temperature returns towards normal.' This could happen within a couple of minutes, or it might take slightly longer depending on the intensity and duration of the exercise.
As long as the change is temporary, Dr Aragona would not be concerned about anyone regularly experiencing 'gym penis'. However, he would recommend speaking to a doctor if someone notices lots of changes alongside recurrent or significant penile or testicular pain, numbness, marked discolouration, swelling, or erectile problems.
How to Recover
Because 'gym penis' is not a specific medical condition, there is no standard recovery guide. Dr Aragona advised: 'The best approach is simply to allow the body to recover naturally, so cooling down gradually after exercise and keeping adequately hydrated'. He added that 'getting warm if the exercise has taken place in a cold environment may help the penis return to its normal resting appearance more quickly'.
Men should not try to force blood back into the penis or manipulate the area to reverse the effect. Letting circulation happen naturally is the recommended approach, and focusing on other things can also help, as recovery is largely a state of mind.
