The UK Government has issued a product safety report warning that multiple baby sleeping bags sold on popular online marketplaces present a risk of asphyxiation and overheating. The products, marketed as suitable for use from birth to 12 months, have been withdrawn from sale.
According to the government's product safety report website, the sleeping bags "do not incorporate arm openings and/or incorporate a hood, which may allow an infant to slip down inside the product during use." The report states that excess fabric may cover an infant's nose and mouth, obstructing breathing and leading to asphyxiation, noting that "infants are particularly vulnerable as they may be unable to remove the obstruction themselves."
Products withdrawn from major retailers
Dozens of sleeping bags have been removed from Etsy, Vinted, Wish, Amazon, as well as Joom, OnBuy and AliExpress. The government website lists 14 baby sleep bags sold via Etsy, along with individual products from the other platforms.
Among the recalled items is a Blue Starfish Shaped Baby Sleeping Bag sold via Joom, described as a "Soft Cotton Yarn Infant Wrap Starfish Baby Sleeping Bag, Knitted Swaddle Sleep Sack with Hood, Cozy Star Shaped Wearable Blanket, Newborn Photography." The Joom item number is 6a842c1ba915f4015c4feffd.
Specific products named in the recall
The Etsy listings include personalized and hooded swaddles, such as the "Baby Sleeping Bag with Name, Personalized Rabbit Ears Flannel Swaddle" (listing ID 4422308994) and the "Crochet Star Baby Sleeping Bag - Fun Hooded Button-Up Christmas Tree Baby Cocoon" (listing ID 4570549714). Other Etsy items include teddy fleece swaddles, organic merino wool sleeping bags, and handmade crochet cocoons.
On Vinted, a cream-coloured knitted infant sleep garment is listed with ID 10028153509. Wish has withdrawn two baby sleep sacks, including one listed as a "Baby Sleep Sack Winter Thick Cotton Wearable Blanket" (listing ID 6a9e5faeee6d1388d27eeabd). OnBuy has removed three products, and AliExpress has withdrawn nine items, including star-hooded swaddles and quilted wraps.
Amazon listings affected
Amazon has withdrawn four sleeping bags, including a "3 in 1 pillow Sleeping Bag Washable & Foldable Cotton Design" (ASIN B0H37631M), a "3 in 1 Bed, Sleeping Bag & Carry Nest Cotton (Multicolor)" (ASIN B0H2VQV9BH), a "3 in 1 pillow Sleeping Bag" in blue (ASIN B0H2VRD5JT), a "Sleeping Bag & Carry Nest Cotton, 3 in 1 Convertible (Panda Blue)" (ASIN B0H2MNB1PC), and a yellow print version (ASIN B0H3767WSH).
The government's product safety report website lists all the affected products and their identifying codes, with the items now removed from sale across the platforms.
