William Saliba Faces Five Months Out After Back Injury, Says Deschamps
Saliba Out Up to Five Months After Back Injury, Deschamps Reveals

Didier Deschamps has revealed that Arsenal defender William Saliba has been playing in agony since March and now faces up to five months on the sidelines after a back injury became unbearable during the World Cup semi-final. Saliba limped out of France’s 2-1 defeat to Spain, and the centre-back could require surgery on a fracture similar to one he suffered at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Deschamps Confirms Long-Term Absence

Speaking ahead of the third-place play-off against England, Deschamps said: “William Saliba got injured and it’s problematic. He went through some examinations. The injury did not worsen. He faced that injury since March. He had some pain and unfortunately the pain was not bearable.” French media reports indicate a lengthy lay-off, with Arsenal yet to announce a recovery timeline.

Impact on Arsenal’s Title Defence

The injury is a major blow to Arsenal as the Premier League champions prepare to defend their title. Saliba had admitted earlier in the tournament to suffering from “niggles,” but the severity became clear after the Spain match. Arsenal’s squad has been hit by multiple injury concerns following an exhausting season, with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka also bringing long-term issues into the World Cup. Ecuador’s Piero Hincapie also suffered muscle problems, reflecting the physical toll of Arsenal’s first title in 22 years.

Deschamps’ Emotional Farewell

Deschamps, who will take charge of his final match against England after a 15-year reign, admitted the occasion will be emotional. “In my head I know it’s the last match. I don’t want anybody to cry. I know that the French national team will be missed but I had the privilege for 15 years to wear this jersey and to go through some amazing moments and also some more difficult moments,” he said. “The end is near but life goes on. I am a positive person and I know it will be great too. The French national team is the most beautiful thing that happened to me. It took 25 years in my life, that’s an amazing thing. I have some unforgettable memories. But the most important thing is what lies ahead.”
