Death in Paradise Star Danny John-Jules in New BBC Comedy Ann Droid

Danny John-Jules, best known for his role as Officer Dwayne Myers in the BBC crime drama Death in Paradise, has taken on a new role in the BBC comedy series Ann Droid. The actor, who was an original cast member when Death in Paradise launched in 2011, played the beloved character for seven years before departing in 2018. He has since made intermittent returns, most recently in the 2024 Christmas special.

New BBC Comedy Ann Droid

In Ann Droid, John-Jules portrays Brian, a taxi driver with a battered car and a humorous disposition. The comedy follows Sue (Sue Johnston), a lonely widower whose son Michael (Paul Ready) buys her an AI eldercare robot named Linda (Diane Morgan) for companionship. Sue initially rejects the robot, but over six episodes, an unexpected friendship develops as the series explores themes of loneliness, bereavement, and the intersection of humanity and technology.

John-Jules's Role as Brian

John-Jules appears in episode two as Brian, a taxi driver who picks up Sue's friend Eileen (Kathryn Hunter) for her aunt's 108th birthday party. When Sue comments on the car's condition, Eileen reassures her that Brian has been driving her for over 40 years. Brian quips, "And I've only been sober for the last five!" He later returns to drop Eileen off, asking for customer reviews: "Preferably ones above the two stars I'm getting at the moment. Would you mind? Oh, and don't mention I got lost and had four pints at lunch or that I ran out of petrol and we had to walk the last 2km, ok?"
