Cannes amfAR Gala Raises Millions for AIDS Research

The annual amfAR Gala held during the Cannes Film Festival has once again proven to be a resounding success, raising millions of euros for AIDS research through a spectacular auction of artwork, jewelry, and exclusive experiences. Held on Thursday at the luxurious Hotel Du Cap, Eden Roc, in Antibes, the event drew a glittering array of actors and celebrities from the festival.

Star-Studded Performances and Host

Guests were treated to a lavish reception on the hotel's lawn, followed by a dinner accompanied by performances from international stars Robbie Williams, Zara Larsson, and Lizzo. The gala was hosted by Geena Davis, who also graces this year's festival poster as a tribute to the iconic film Thelma & Louise. On the red carpet, Lizzo expressed her excitement about her upcoming album, stating, 'I'm just so excited. I'm trying to bring back good, clean fun. Like, I just want to have fun again, people need to dance, people need to laugh.'

Among the notable attendees were Rami Malek, whose film is in competition at Cannes, along with Eva Longoria, Heidi Klum, Sofia Carson, Natasha Poly, and Bar Refaeli.

After fierce bidding, two opportunities were sold for 375,000 euros ($435,545) each.

Art lovers were thrilled as a complete set of Andy Warhol screen prints of Marilyn Monroe fetched an impressive 2.8 million euros ($3,252,228). Festival sponsor Chopard contributed diamond earrings that sold for 600,000 euros ($696,906). A limited-edition Audemars Piguet watch, one of only five in existence, went for a staggering 1,450,000 euros ($1,684,160).

Memorable Musical Moments

Robbie Williams performed a medley of his greatest hits, culminating with Angels, which he dedicated to his daughter. A surprise auction lot of VIP concert tickets was split between two bidders at 220,000 euros ($255,527) each for two sets of tickets.

Zara Larsson closed the dinner with an energetic performance that had diners dancing in front of the stage. The evening continued with an after-party around the hotel's pool, where guests danced and celebrated into the night.

amfAR's Legacy

Since its founding in 1985, amfAR has raised nearly 841 million euros ($950 million) to support AIDS research and programs, awarding more than 3,800 grants to date. This year's gala adds a significant contribution to that ongoing effort, combining glamour with philanthropy on the French Riviera.
