A recent study has indicated that GLP-1 drugs, commonly used for weight loss and diabetes, may also slow the progression of certain cancers. Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic's Taussig Cancer Institute analyzed data from over 12,000 patients with seven types of solid tumors at stages one to three, including breast, prostate, lung, colorectal, liver, kidney, and pancreatic cancers.
Key Findings
The study, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology, compared patients taking GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy with those on DPP-4 inhibitors, another diabetes medication. Results showed that GLP-1 users had lower rates of metastatic progression in six of the seven cancers studied. Notably, lung cancer patients were 50% less likely to progress to stage four, and breast cancer patients were 43% less likely, according to NBC News.
Statistically Significant Reductions
Lead author Mark David Orland reported a "meaningful reduction" in cancer spread for lung, breast, colorectal, and liver cancers. However, no significant benefit was observed for kidney cancer. The study was observational, meaning it does not prove causation, but Orland noted it "provides early evidence that future studies are worth pursuing."
Rising Popularity of GLP-1 Drugs
The findings come amid soaring use of GLP-1 medications. A KFF poll last November found that one in eight U.S. adults were taking a GLP-1 drug for weight loss, diabetes, or other conditions, with nearly one in five having used them at some point. Initially developed for type 2 diabetes, these drugs are now widely prescribed for weight management.
While the results are promising, experts caution that further research is needed to confirm the link and understand the mechanisms behind the observed effects.
