Consumer experts at Which? have issued a warning about two commonly overlooked areas when applying sun cream: the eyelids and armpits. Despite the UK's reputation for overcast weather, UV rays can still cause burns, and these frequently missed spots can lead to painful and uncomfortable sun damage.
The Forgotten Areas
According to Which? experts, individuals who do not wear sunglasses must apply sun cream to their eyelids to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, people routinely forget to apply sun cream to their armpits. The experts advise applying sun cream before deodorant and reapplying if sweating. They also reminded people not to neglect the back of their hands.
Other easily missed areas include the lips, feet, behind the knees, heels, ankles, soles, and between the toes. The NHS recommends using at least factor 30 sunscreen and reapplying it regularly.
Sun Safety Tips
The NHS advises adults and children to avoid direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm from March to October, when the sun is most intense. Additional guidance includes never allowing skin to burn, covering up with appropriate clothing and sunglasses, and taking particular care with children. Babies and young children have more delicate skin, and repeated sun exposure can lead to skin cancer later in life.
Treating Sunburn
For those who do get sunburned, the NHS suggests sponging the affected skin with cool water or taking a cool bath or shower, then applying a soothing aftersun lotion containing aloe vera. Painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen can help reduce inflammation. Seek medical attention if you feel unwell or if the skin becomes severely swollen or blistered.
