The Wegovy weight loss pill, now available in the UK for private purchase, comes with a critical 30-minute rule, according to medical experts. The pill, containing the same active ingredient semaglutide as the Wegovy injection, must be taken every morning on an empty stomach with up to 120ml of plain water, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other medications.
Key Differences Between Pill and Injection
Superintendent pharmacist Aaron Arman from CheqUp, a treatment provider selling the pill, emphasised that switching to the pill is not a step down. He explained: "The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same molecule as the Wegovy injection. It is the same medicine in a different form, with its own clinical profile and its own set of requirements." However, the most important practical difference is the dosing regimen. Mr Arman stated: "If your mornings are unpredictable, this is worth thinking through carefully before switching."
Switching from Injection to Pill
Patients switching from the injection will not start from scratch. Mr Arman said: "There is a clinical pathway that maps where you are now to the right starting point on the Wegovy pill. Your clinician will look at your current dose and treatment history and work out the equivalent starting dose for the tablet." He added that an adjustment period is expected as the body adapts to oral absorption, but this is not the same as beginning treatment anew.
Physical Changes and Side Effects
Some people may experience a temporary increase in appetite or return of food noise during the transition. Mr Arman noted: "This is a physiological response, not a sign that the treatment is not working. It usually settles within a few weeks as the oral dose reaches its effective level." Indigestion may also be more common with the pill. To ease discomfort, he suggested peppermint or ginger tea, over-the-counter antacids like Gaviscon or Rennie, or proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole. If issues persist, patients should consult their clinician.
Dosing Cycle and Contraindications
The pill comes in 30-day blister packs of 30 tablets, compared to the 28-day cycle of injectable treatments. Mr Arman issued a strong warning: "Taking the Wegovy pill alongside any other GLP-1 treatment, including the Wegovy injection or Mounjaro, is contraindicated." Switching means stopping the injectable, with a typical 7-day gap between the last injection and the first tablet, as advised by a clinician.
The Wegovy pill is the first oral semaglutide approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for weight loss in the UK. It is currently available only through private prescription, not on the NHS.
