Dr Punam Warns Not to Ignore Dizziness Symptom

Dr Punam Krishan, a BBC health expert and practising GP, has urged people not to ignore dizziness, describing the sensation as something that can 'feel horrible'. She emphasised that while dizziness becomes more common with age, it should not be dismissed, especially if it is persistent or recurring.

Understanding Dizziness

Dizziness can manifest in various forms, including feeling faint, lightheaded, or as if the room is spinning. Dr Punam explained that identifying the specific type of dizziness can help narrow down the underlying cause. She stressed that 'language is important' and that being precise about symptoms can aid doctors in making an accurate diagnosis.

What Different Dizzy Feelings Could Mean

According to Dr Punam, lightheadedness or a feeling of faintness may indicate dehydration, heat exhaustion, low blood pressure, or low blood sugar. On the other hand, a sensation of the room spinning is often associated with vertigo. The NHS adds that dizziness can result from sudden drops in blood pressure, inner-ear problems, or side effects of new medications. It may also be linked to ear infections, migraines, stress, anxiety, low blood sugar, or iron deficiency anaemia. Additionally, hormonal changes during perimenopause can trigger dizziness.

When to Seek Medical Help

Dr Punam advised that if dizziness is persistent, keeps returning, or impacts quality of life, it is important to get it checked out. She recommended seeing a GP who can fully assess symptoms and rule out serious conditions.

Tips for Managing Dizziness at Home

The NHS suggests that dizziness often resolves on its own. To manage it, people should lie down until the dizziness passes and then get up slowly, move carefully, rest adequately, and drink plenty of fluids, especially water. It is also advisable to avoid coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. Crucially, individuals should refrain from activities that could be dangerous while dizzy, such as driving, climbing ladders, or operating heavy machinery. If dizziness persists or recurs, a GP should be consulted.
