West Nile Virus Outbreak Spreads Across Europe
Health authorities are sounding the alarm as cases of the potentially deadly West Nile virus surge across Europe. The mosquito-borne disease has already claimed lives this year, with experts warning the public to take precautions.
Rising Infection Rates
Recent data shows a significant increase in West Nile virus infections compared to previous years. Southern European countries are particularly affected, but cases are being reported further north than usual due to changing climate patterns.
Symptoms to Watch For
Most infected people (about 80%) show no symptoms, but about 20% develop West Nile fever with:
- High fever
- Severe headaches
- Body aches
- Joint pain
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Rash
In rare cases (about 1 in 150), the virus can cause severe neurological illness including encephalitis or meningitis.
Protection Measures
Health experts recommend:
- Using insect repellent containing DEET
- Wearing long sleeves and trousers during dawn and dusk
- Eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed
- Using mosquito nets when sleeping outdoors
- Installing window screens
Vulnerable Groups
People over 60 and those with weakened immune systems are at highest risk for severe illness. There is currently no vaccine available for humans.
Climate Change Connection
Experts warn that rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns are creating more favorable conditions for disease-carrying mosquitoes to spread into new areas of Europe.
