Beloved TV presenter and Married At First Sight expert Mel Schilling has delivered a devastating update on her health, revealing that her colon cancer is now terminal. In a recent Instagram post, the 54-year-old dating coach shared that doctors have informed her there is nothing more they can do to treat her condition, leaving fans and followers deeply saddened.
A Journey of Misdiagnosis and Struggle
Mel Schilling's cancer journey began with severe symptoms that were initially overlooked. She first experienced intense stomach pain, along with an inability to eat or use the bathroom properly. Despite seeking medical help, she was misdiagnosed on two separate occasions before finally receiving a correct diagnosis in December 2023. A scan at that time revealed a tumour the size of a lemon in her colon, which she nicknamed 'Terry'.
Although the tumour was successfully removed through surgery, this was only the beginning of her ordeal. In February 2024, during a routine follow-up scan, small nodules were detected on her lung, indicating that the cancer had metastasised or spread to other parts of her body.
Gruelling Treatment and Professional Resilience
Over the next two years, Mel underwent an intense regimen of 16 rounds of chemotherapy. Remarkably, she continued to film for Married At First Sight throughout this period, striving to maintain a sense of normalcy and identity. However, behind the scenes, the reality was far from glamorous.
In a candid interview with OK! magazine in January 2025, Mel disclosed the harsh truths of working while battling cancer. She described moments of vomiting and tears after filming sessions, highlighting the immense physical and emotional toll. Watching her final seasons on television proved to be a bittersweet experience for her and her husband, Gareth Brisbane, as they noticed she did not look or sound like her usual self, lacking energy and focus.
