Chef's hack keeps lettuce fresh for over 60 days

A South Korean chef has shared a simple method to keep lettuce fresh for more than 60 days. Known as Mr Rice, the culinary expert credits his grandmother for the trick, which involves cutting off the stem, soaking a paper towel in drinking alcohol, attaching it to the lettuce, and storing it in an airtight bag in the fridge.

“This lettuce is 60 days old and still fresh,” Mr Rice said, demonstrating the leafy green. He explained that alcohol is better than water because it prevents rotting. The damp paper towel is attached to the lettuce head, placed in a plastic bag, and sealed with a homemade stopper made from a bottle top to keep air out.

For shorter storage, a mother previously shared a technique to keep iceberg lettuce fresh for 10 days using aluminium foil. In a Facebook post, she advised wrapping the lettuce in foil before refrigerating. “This lettuce has been in the fridge for 10 days. Still fresh, maybe even fresher than when I bought it,” she wrote.

Aluminium foil protects food from airborne bacteria and retains moisture, making it effective for freezer storage as well. Other users reported using foil on celery, cucumber, capsicum, and spring onions, with one saying, “I wrap my lettuce in tin foil and also put strawberries in airtight glass jars. They last weeks.”
