Dietitian Unveils 11 Nutritious and Affordable Aldi Supermarket Finds

An accredited practising dietitian has highlighted 11 nutritional discoveries available at Aldi supermarkets, demonstrating that maintaining a healthy diet does not require a hefty budget. Jess Burvill, a health coach, compiled a list of what she describes as 'an absolute treasure trove of budget-friendly staples and solid dupes of big-name brands', all accessible in Aldi stores across Australia.

Burvill emphasised that these selections are both nourishing and cost-effective, spanning everyday essentials, snacks, pantry items, and even a sweet indulgence. 'This is not an exclusive list, but these are some of the products I rate highly,' she stated in a social media post shared on her @dailyservenutrition account.

Top Picks for Healthy Eating on a Budget

1. Wild Origins Soy & Linseed Sourdough, $4.99

Bread is a household staple, and Burvill recommends Aldi's exclusive Wild Origins sourdough as an excellent alternative to artisan bakery Sonoma's loaves. 'The ingredients and nutrition are similar - but not identical - to the Sonoma bread sold in Woolworths, but this one is $2.50 cheaper!' she explained. For those not fond of sourdough, she noted that Wild Origins also offers a rye version that is equally commendable.

2. Yoguri Greek Style Strained Yoghurt Plain 900g tub, $5.89

This Greek-style yoghurt has gained popularity among Aldi shoppers, though it can be challenging to find due to high demand. Burvill praised its simple ingredients: skim milk and live cultures. She highlighted that its nutritional profile closely mirrors that of the popular Chobani Light Greek Yoghurt, but at approximately 30 per cent lower cost.

3. Brooklea No Added Sugar Raspberry Yoghurt Pouch, $1.19

Burvill expressed pleasant surprise at the Brooklea No Added Sugar pouch range, ideal for children's lunchboxes. 'One of the better kids' yoghurt pouch ranges. Simple ingredients, no added sugar and a decent amount of calcium to support growing bodies. And all at a bargain price!' The pouches are available in Raspberry, Strawberry, Vanilla, and Tropical flavours.

4. Hillcrest Paleo Bars 5 pack, $4.99 and 5. Hillcrest Premium Nut Bars 5 pack, $3.99

Two snack bar options from Hillcrest earned Burvill's approval for on-the-go nutrition. The Paleo Bars, made primarily from dates and nuts, offer natural sweetness without added sugar. The Premium Nut Bars, containing 64% nuts and seeds with less than 5g of sugar per bar, provide a solid snack choice at a lower price point.

6. Deli Originals Fresh Hommus Dip Multipack $2.49

Burvill enthused about hommus as a nutritional standout among dips. These multipacks come in convenient snack-sized portions, perfect for pairing with vegetables like carrots, celery, or capsicum to increase daily vegetable intake.

7. The Fresh Salad Co Lentil Tabbouleh Salad, $6

This pre-made salad, featuring lentils, chickpeas, vegetables, and a lemon dressing, serves as a convenient and healthy lunch option. Burvill suggested pairing it with canned tuna or salmon for a high-protein, high-fibre meal that sustains energy throughout the afternoon.

8. Portview Power Bowl, $2.99

The Portview Power Bowl range offers another handy lunch solution, combining tuna and beans in varieties such as 'Iron', 'Magnesium', and 'Vitamin B12'. Each bowl provides around 250 calories, along with a decent amount of fibre and protein, and can be enjoyed cold or gently heated.

9. Snack'N'Go Blackbeans with lime & herbs, Snack'N'Go Chickpeas with olive oil, garlic and rosemary, Snack'N'Go Chickpeas with zesty vinaigrette, $0.99 per can

Burvill compared these tinned legumes to the Edgell Snack Time range available in major supermarkets. She keeps a stash in her cupboard for adding to lunch salads, noting that one can contributes approximately 5g of protein and 4g of fibre, enhanced by flavourful dressings.

10. Imperial Grain Super Blend Microwave Rice Pouch 250g, $1.99

For a quick meal accompaniment, Burvill recommended Aldi's wholegrain microwave rice pouches. 'Just heat and serve for an instant fibre boost to your meals,' she said, adding that a 125g serve of the Super Blend mix delivers 100 per cent of the recommended daily wholegrain target.

11. Moser Roth Finest Dark Chocolate 70% Cocoa $4.99

For a guilt-free sweet treat, Burvill endorsed Moser Roth dark chocolate, which comes in 25g individual portions at half the price of Lindt. She highlighted that dark chocolate contains anti-inflammatory polyphenols and essential minerals like iron, zinc, magnesium, and copper.

In summary, Burvill's expert-approved list proves that healthy eating can be both affordable and accessible, encouraging shoppers to explore these budget-friendly options at Aldi without compromising on nutrition or taste.
