As winter temperatures drop, rats and mice are seeking warmth and shelter in UK homes. Pest control experts have shared affordable methods to deter rodents, including a natural solution costing just £4.
Tony King, owner of pest control firm The Pied Piper, recommends peppermint oil as an effective deterrent. 'Rats possess a good sense of smell and hate the scent of peppermint,' he says. Soak cotton balls in peppermint essential oil, available for £4-£6 at supermarkets, and place them near entry points such as bins, drains, or sheds. Alternatively, mix the oil with water and vinegar and spray around bin bases or compost heaps.
White vinegar is another cheap option. 'Rats hate the acidity and strong smell,' King explains. Spray it around bin areas, fence lines, or compost bins. For added effect, combine with cayenne pepper or crushed garlic, which act as irritants. Another unusual method is using dirty cat litter. Sprinkling dry, used litter near entry points signals a predator's presence.
Waste management expert Mark Hall from Business Waste emphasises the importance of bin hygiene. 'Weekly washing of bins with a disinfectant like Zoflora or a bleach-water solution, costing under £3 per bottle, can prevent odours that attract pests,' he advises. Sprinkling baking soda at the bin's bottom absorbs moisture and smells. Never leave tied bin bags outside bins, as rats can gnaw through them. Use a wheelie bin lock strap, available online for under £10, to secure lids.
King also recommends cleaning food caddies daily or every other day with hot water and mild disinfectant to prevent fermentation and odours. These simple, eco-friendly measures can help keep homes rodent-free this winter.
