Tragedy Strikes Indianapolis Marathon

Two participants died after suffering separate medical emergencies during the Indianapolis marathon on Saturday, November 8, 2025. Event organiser Beyond Monumental confirmed the tragic news, stating that both individuals experienced unrelated health crises during the 26.2-mile (42 km) race.

Emergency Response and Official Statement

Both runners received immediate medical attention on the course before being transported to local hospitals, where they were later pronounced dead. In an official statement, Beyond Monumental expressed its profound grief and emphasised that participant safety is our top priority.

The organisation extended its gratitude to the on-site medical team and local first responders, stating: "Our on-site medical team and local first responders provided immediate, coordinated care. We are working closely with medical and public safety officials and will continue to offer our full support."

Record Turnout and Race Highlights

The tragic incidents occurred during a record-breaking year for the event. The 18th annual CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K saw a staggering 17,500 runners fill the streets of downtown Indianapolis.

Participants hailed from every U.S. state and 22 countries worldwide. Despite the day's sombre events, the marathon concluded with notable athletic achievements. Joseph Whelan set a new men's marathon course record, finishing in 2:12:29, while Amanda Mosborg won the women's race with a time of 2:32:01.

Officials have not yet released the names or ages of the deceased runners. The next Indianapolis Monumental event is scheduled for November 7, 2026.
