Gavin and Stacey star Mathew Horne struggled to contain his emotions during a stage show in Taunton, Somerset, as he revealed that a crew member from the show's finale had suddenly died. The actor, known for playing Gavin Shipman, was speaking at his 'In Conversation With...' event when he became distracted by the news.
According to reports, Horne told the audience that the crew member, named Rob, was a driver on the finale and was in his early 40s. He said: 'Sorry. I got distracted. Earlier on... we had a driver on the finale called Rob and he was in his early 40s... and I found out via the Whatsapp group earlier that he has passed away and I got slightly distracted there.' Horne added that Rob was 'a really lovely guy' who leaves behind a four-year-old child.
The actor also spoke about the close bond among the cast and crew, noting that they have worked together for nearly two decades. He recalled how, after losing his mother in 2019, his on-screen mother Alison Steadman became a surrogate mother to him, often signing texts as 'Mum'.
The Gavin and Stacey finale aired on Christmas Day last year, drawing 19.1 million viewers. The series, created by James Corden and Ruth Jones, concluded with Smithy and Nessa finally marrying after a five-year time jump, with several twists involving Smithy's fiancée Sonia and the Shipman family.
