Scots Suffer as NHS Waiting Times Soar Under SNP

On Tuesday, it was revealed that nearly 34,000 Scots have been waiting over a year for NHS treatment. Under John Swinney's leadership, Scotland's health service is in a dire state, with a staggering number of patients enduring prolonged agony.

Failed Promise on Waiting Times

The First Minister pledged to eliminate waits of more than 12 months by the end of March, but has failed to meet this target. This latest broken promise adds to a growing list of SNP failures. In contrast, the previous UK Conservative government had effectively eliminated year-plus waits in England two years ago. The question remains: why are so many Scots suffering intolerable pain, and in some cases dying, while awaiting treatment?

Impact on the Elderly

Two decades of SNP mismanagement have led to this crisis, with elderly patients being particularly affected. Older individuals who have contributed to the system for years are being let down when they need healthcare most, forcing many to deplete their life savings for expensive private treatment. For hip and knee replacements, some Scots have waited up to half a decade. In Tayside, one patient waited 2,049 days for a hip replacement. In 2024-25, the median wait for such procedures exceeded one year in five of Scotland's 14 health boards.

Rise in Private Healthcare

This damning situation has driven a 55% increase in private admissions since 2019-20. Many elderly patients have used their retirement funds to end their suffering. Those unable to afford private care must endure months or years of crippling pain. The SNP has produced a series of failed health secretaries and recovery plans, but the Scottish Conservatives propose practical solutions.

Conservative Proposals

The Scottish Conservatives have costed plans to reduce waiting lists and improve healthcare for older patients. For knee and hip operations, they would purchase capacity from the NHS in England and Northern Ireland, as well as from the private sector. When resources and staff are available elsewhere, Scottish patients should not be denied treatment due to SNP workforce planning failures.

Additionally, restoring the Cold Weather Payment would help pensioners keep their heating on during harsh winter months. These straightforward policies address issues that should have been SNP priorities but have been neglected in favor of their obsession with breaking up the UK. If the Nationalists win a majority on May 7, the health service will only worsen. To prevent this, voters are urged to support the Scottish Conservatives on their peach ballot.
