Prue Leith's Weight Loss Jab Experiment Ends in Disappointment

Dame Prue Leith, the celebrated 86-year-old television cook and former Great British Bake Off judge, has publicly disclosed her disappointing experience with the popular weight loss injection Mounjaro. In a candid revelation, she stated the treatment proved completely ineffective for her, describing it as a "bloody expensive" and ultimately futile endeavour.

Inspired by Husband's Success but Marred by Personal Failure

The culinary icon was motivated to try the medication after witnessing the remarkable transformation of her husband, retired fashion designer John Playfair. "He lost three stone and is healthier than anything," Leith explained, which prompted her optimistic decision to give the injections a try. Despite this inspiration, her own month-long trial yielded no results whatsoever.

"I tried, but it didn't do anything. I didn't lose a single pound," Leith confessed to the Press Association. The broadcaster attributed her lack of success to poor adherence to the treatment's guidelines, admitting she failed to properly read the instructions.

The 'Starvation Mode' Misstep

Leith detailed how she inadvertently consumed only approximately 200 calories daily during her treatment period, triggering what she described as a physiological "starvation mode" response. "What your body then does is it simply says, 'this is starvation. I mustn't let anything go'," she elaborated. This extreme calorie restriction paradoxically prevented any weight loss despite two weeks of near-fasting.

Reflecting on the experience, Leith concluded: "I don't think I need to use it. It's bloody expensive, and I think if it's not going to work, it's a waste of money." Nevertheless, she maintains the treatment is "worth a go" for others, based on her husband's positive outcome.

Leith's Unconventional Dietary Habits Revealed

The revelation coincides with promotional discussions for Leith's latest book, Being Old…And Learning To Love It!, where she shares surprising insights into her dietary habits during her Bake Off tenure. Contrary to expectations, she never gained weight while judging the competition, attributing this to a peculiar regimen of cake and red wine.

"Cake and wine go together," Leith told PA. "It's obviously not a diet to be recommended, but it worked fine for me. For 20 days, I lived on cake and wine." She clarified this was limited to the show's filming schedule—two days weekly over ten weeks—rather than a permanent lifestyle.

Bake Off Departure and Future Plans

Last month, Dame Prue announced her decision to step down from The Great British Bake Off after nine years as a judge. Her primary reason centres on the summer filming schedule, which she now wishes to dedicate to European holidays. "I could have happily gone on doing it forever. I know I would miss it, but I'm running out of time," she expressed with characteristic honesty.

Her replacement, cookbook author Nigella Lawson, has received Leith's wholehearted endorsement. "She is going to be absolutely brilliant. She'll be very different, but she's a class act. She really knows what she's doing," Leith commented warmly.

A Distinguished Career Beyond Baking

Beyond her Bake Off fame, Dame Prue Leith boasts an illustrious six-decade career encompassing judging roles on Great British Menu and extensive contributions to food education. Her services to food, broadcasting, and charity were formally recognised with a damehood in 2021, cementing her status as a national culinary treasure.

While her weight loss experiment proved unsuccessful, Leith's frank discussion highlights the variable outcomes of pharmaceutical interventions and the importance of proper protocol adherence. Her experience serves as a cautionary tale amidst growing public interest in medical weight management solutions.
