A comprehensive survey of 2,000 patients in England has uncovered troubling trends in healthcare attendance. The findings indicate that one in four individuals have missed a health appointment at some point, with an additional 11% arriving too late to be seen. These no-shows accounted for 4.3% of all GP appointments last year, equating to approximately one in every 23 scheduled visits.

This volume of missed appointments translates to an entire day of lost consultation time at every single GP practice in England each month, creating bottlenecks that delay care for other patients. The NHS is now intensifying efforts to address this issue through a targeted digital initiative.

New Campaign Encourages Use of Push Notifications

The newly launched campaign, dubbed "Tap the NHS App," focuses on encouraging the app's over 40 million registered users to enable push notifications. These alerts send timely reminders about upcoming appointments, allowing patients to cancel or reschedule if necessary, thereby freeing up slots for others.

Dr. Amanda Doyle, National Director for Primary Care and Community Services at NHS England, emphasized the importance of this feature. "People will often have genuine reasons for not being able to make an appointment or arriving too late, but it's really important that they let us know if possible so we can offer the appointment to someone else," she stated.

Dr. Doyle added, "One of the easiest ways you can reduce the risk of missing an appointment is by tapping the NHS app to turn on notifications to get reminders. It's fantastic to see that GPs provided more than eight million extra appointments for their patients in 2025, and I hope this new campaign will help increase that number even more in 2026."

Beyond appointment management, the NHS app serves as a versatile tool for patient care. Users can leverage its features to order repeat prescriptions, access personal health records, and review medical notes and documents. The app is available for free download via the Apple App Store and Google Play, making it accessible to a wide audience.
