Measles Alert: Thousands of Victorians at Risk as Health Department Lists Over 20 Exposure Sites

Thousands of residents in Victoria have been issued a stark warning that they could be at risk of contracting measles, following an announcement from the state's health authority. The Department of Health has revealed a list of more than 20 exposure sites, urging vigilance among the public.

Confirmed Cases and Travel Links

On Saturday, Victoria's Department of Health confirmed two new cases of measles, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the state to four for the year 2026. All of these cases have been directly linked to overseas travel from regions in South-East and South Asia, highlighting the ongoing global spread of the virus.

Exposure Sites and Monitoring Advice

Individuals who attended any of the specified exposure sites during the listed dates and times are strongly advised to monitor themselves for symptoms of measles for up to 18 days after their visit. The exposure sites encompass a range of locations, including hospitals, airports, shopping centres, and recreational areas.

Symptoms to Watch For:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red or sore eyes
  • General feeling of being unwell

These symptoms are typically followed by a rash that often begins on the face before spreading down the body. Anyone experiencing these signs is urged to seek medical care immediately and to inform healthcare providers in advance of a potential measles exposure.

Vaccination and Preventive Measures

In a statement, Victoria's Department of Health emphasised the importance of vaccination: 'If you have not received two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR vaccine) or are unsure, please contact your GP as you may be recommended to receive preventive treatment.'

The department noted that preventive treatment is most effective when administered soon after exposure, usually within 72 hours for the MMR vaccine or up to 6 days for immunoglobulin, which is recommended for at-risk groups such as young infants, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.

Detailed List of Exposure Sites

The health authority has provided a comprehensive list of exposure sites, with specific monitoring periods for each. Key locations include:

  • Monitor for symptoms up to February 2: Vietnam Airlines Flight VN 781 at Melbourne Airport, Tullamarine; Melbourne Airport Terminal 2; Jetaway Shuttle Bus and Parking in Tullamarine; Dong Nam A in St Albans.
  • Monitor for symptoms up to February 3: Barwon Health North Urgent Care Centre in Norlane.
  • Monitor for symptoms up to February 10-15: Various sites in Princetown, Apollo Bay, Cape Otway, Wye River, Lorne, and others, including Emirates Flight EK406, Sunshine Hospital in St Albans, and the Koala Conservation Reserve in Rhyll.

Authorities are encouraging all Victorians to verify their vaccination status and take immediate action if they suspect exposure. This alert underscores the critical need for public awareness and proactive health measures to prevent further spread of measles in the community.
