Man City Stars Back Flintoffs' £1.1m Hospital Cinema Fundraiser

Manchester City Footballers Champion Flintoffs' Hospital Cinema Campaign

Prominent players from Manchester City Football Club have publicly endorsed a major fundraising initiative led by former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff and his wife Rachael. The ambitious campaign aims to raise £1.1 million to construct the region's first dedicated MediCinema facility within the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI).

A Therapeutic Space for Patients

The proposed in-house cinema is specifically designed to serve as a comforting and distracting environment for patients undergoing treatment. This innovative project seeks to provide a much-needed respite from the clinical hospital atmosphere, offering a space for relaxation and entertainment.

The fundraising effort has already achieved significant momentum, with nearly £800,000 collected toward the ultimate goal. Support has come from across Manchester City's football community, with both the men's and women's teams actively promoting the cause.

Star-Studded Support from City Squad

Several high-profile Manchester City athletes have recorded personal video messages urging public support for the MediCinema project. Among those lending their voices to the campaign are:

  • Erling Haaland
  • Bunny Shaw
  • Ruben Dias
  • Bernardo Silva
  • Nico O'Reilly

The planned 50-seat cinema facility is expected to benefit patients at both the Manchester Royal Infirmary and the adjacent Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. Once operational, the cinema is projected to screen approximately 260 films annually, providing regular entertainment opportunities for patients and their families.

Community Generosity and Final Push

Rachael Flintoff expressed profound gratitude for the widespread community support, stating: 'The continued generosity we're seeing is incredible. This Appeal has always been about people coming together to make a difference. To get to £788,000 proves what's possible when everyone comes together, and now we just need one final push to make the MediCinema a reality for patients in Manchester hospitals.'

Kathy Cowell CBE DL, Chair of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, emphasized the therapeutic value of the project: 'The impact of this cinema will go far, far beyond entertainment. It will offer moments of relief, togetherness and normality at times when they are needed most. As we enter this final phase of the Appeal, every single donation, no matter its size, will help us open the doors sooner and start delivering those vital moments of movie magic for our patients.'

The fundraising campaign represents a collaborative effort between sports personalities, healthcare institutions, and the broader Manchester community to enhance patient wellbeing through innovative facilities.
