In a deeply personal revelation, television personality Lisa Rinna has opened up about her daughter Delilah Belle Hamlin's harrowing decade-long battle with a serious autoimmune condition. The details are disclosed in Rinna's new memoir, You Better Believe I'm Gonna Talk About It, shedding light on a family crisis that dominated their lives for years.
The Diagnosis and Devastating Symptoms
Rinna, 62, explains that her now 27-year-old daughter was diagnosed with PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) at just 11 years old. This rare disorder, triggered by an immune system malfunction, leads to a sudden and severe onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder and other neuropsychiatric symptoms.
The reality star describes how Hamlin began experiencing what she calls "expansive panic attacks." These episodes were so intense that her daughter would scream, yell, and violently pound on the windows of their home in desperate attempts to escape. Rinna recalls having to physically restrain Hamlin, pulling her away from windows during these terrifying moments.
Family Life Turned Upside Down
The condition rapidly escalated, severely limiting Hamlin's daily functioning. She became unable to ride the school bus, use elevators, or travel by airplane. Her anxiety grew so profound that she refused to attend school unless her father, actor Harry Hamlin, sat outside her classroom for hours each day.
Rinna developed a coping routine, driving her daughter around in the car "like how new moms drive babies around, to self soothe." She notes that nighttime brought particularly severe symptoms, with panic "creeping in almost like the sundowning patterns dementia patients exhibit." The former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star bluntly describes this period as "the worst time" in her family's life, adding that Hamlin's behavior was "almost like she was possessed by the devil."
Additional Health Complications and Treatment
Hamlin's health challenges compounded when she was later diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis (commonly known as mono), which left her completely bedridden for an entire month. "She was as sick as you've ever seen anybody. We felt we'd lost our child," Rinna reflects emotionally.
The family pursued extensive medical intervention, sending Hamlin to "every doctor imaginable" including numerous therapists and specialists. Rinna admits that their lives became completely centered around Delilah's care, saying "Delilah was melting down and everything in our lives revolved around taking care of her."
Impact on the Family Dynamic
This intense focus inevitably affected Rinna's younger daughter, Amelia Gray. The mother acknowledges that Amelia "felt a bit left out" during this period. While insisting "nobody meant to neglect Amelia," Rinna concedes that their attention was overwhelmingly directed toward Delilah's needs.
As a result, Amelia often stayed with the family's housekeeper and nanny in Inglewood while her parents managed Delilah's medical crises. Despite this challenging childhood, Amelia has since become a highly successful model, booking multiple Vogue covers and fronting campaigns for luxury brands like Valentino and Givenchy.
Recovery and Current Status
Hamlin's health struggles persisted into her early twenties, leading to two separate rehab stays in 2018. She has since achieved sobriety and reports that treatment has significantly helped manage her anxiety and depression.
In 2023, Hamlin publicly addressed her condition on Instagram, writing: "I've been struggling with autoimmune/chronic illness issues that I've been silently battling and overcoming. It's definitely been tough mentally alongside physically."
Today, both Hamlin sisters work as models, though Delilah is increasingly focusing on her burgeoning music career. She previously starred alongside her mother in the Lifetime television movie Mommy Meanest.
Rinna's Tell-All Book Promotion
Rinna is currently promoting her revealing new book, which promises additional Hollywood insights including her thoughts on who she considers the industry's "biggest bully" and her candid opinions about former RHOBH co-stars. The memoir provides not just celebrity gossip but a raw, honest account of a family's medical ordeal that tested their resilience to its limits.
