Florida Teenager Hospitalised with Critical Injuries After Skiing Accident in Colorado
A promising senior student from a prestigious Florida private school is currently battling for her life in a Colorado hospital following a catastrophic skiing accident during her spring break vacation. Zoey McVoy, a student at Saint Andrew's School in Boca Raton, had eagerly anticipated her first skiing experience during a trip to the upscale resort of Vail, Colorado, with a friend. However, the excursion turned to tragedy on Monday when she sustained devastating head and spinal injuries, necessitating an emergency airlift to medical care.
Severe Injuries and Multiple Surgeries
According to a GoFundMe campaign organised by Michelle Grau, Zoey's injuries are extensive and life-threatening. She has suffered shattered ribs, a brain bleed, internal bleeding, a ruptured spleen, facial fractures, and a shattered eye socket. Additionally, reports from the Boca Raton Tribune indicate a collapsed lung and a spinal cord injury. The teenager has already undergone several urgent surgeries and remains heavily sedated in the Intensive Care Unit at Denver Health hospital, where medical teams are working meticulously to stabilise her precarious condition.
In a personal update, Zoey recounted the initial assessment by ski patrol and local hospital staff, who believed her injuries were not severe. This perception changed rapidly when it became apparent that her condition was far more critical, prompting an urgent helicopter transfer to a specialist facility. Upon arrival, doctors immediately performed surgery to address a grade five spleen rupture, which posed an immediate threat to her life. Further examinations revealed eight severely broken ribs, which had bruised and punctured her lung, alongside a brain bleed and concussion.
Long Road to Recovery Ahead
Following the spleen surgery and enduring hours of intense pain, Zoey's medical team placed titanium plates on her ribs to realign them. Subsequently, they discovered fractures in three different skull bones, requiring additional surgical intervention. While Zoey has expressed gratitude that all three surgeries proceeded successfully, she acknowledges that her recovery will be neither easy nor brief. The GoFundMe page starkly notes that instead of enjoying the final milestones of her senior year—including prom, graduation, and college preparations—Zoey now faces a protracted and challenging rehabilitation journey.
Once she is medically stable enough to be discharged from hospital, Zoey will likely require extensive rehabilitation, physical therapy, and ongoing medical care. Reflecting on the uncertain future, Zoey admitted she has no clear vision of what the coming months will entail regarding her return to school, graduation ceremonies, college decisions, or daily life. She extended heartfelt thanks to supporters, emphasising that her family cherishes each message of encouragement.
Community Support and Family Background
The fundraising initiative has garnered significant community backing, raising over $56,000 by Tuesday afternoon, accompanied by an outpouring of prayers and hopeful messages for the McVoy family. Zoey's mother, Ann McVoy, described the situation as having a "long road ahead," with the family striving to navigate this unique and distressing circumstance. In a Facebook update, Ann confirmed that all necessary surgeries have been completed without serious complications, and Zoey is now in a healing phase.
The McVoy family is deeply embedded in the Boca Raton community, known for their volunteer work and involvement in local education. Zoey attends Saint Andrew's School on an academic scholarship, with her family characterised as a devoted unit integral to the city's social fabric through classroom volunteering and school-sanctioned activities. Saint Andrew's, which charges $46,750 annually for grades 9-12, provides students with comprehensive resources including technology, meals, sports, extracurriculars, and academic support such as college counselling.
Ann McVoy has previously expressed admiration for her daughter's talents, noting in 2018 that Zoey had learned to play the guitar, piano, and drums, describing her as "simply amazing." Zoey herself has demonstrated a keen interest in healthcare and law, participating in a medicine course at school that strengthened her passion for both fields, as highlighted in a Saint Andrew's Facebook post. Neighbour Staci Lyn Garcia shared on social media that the accident "hit close to home," praising the McVoy family as exemplars of Boca Raton's community spirit.
