Dr. Johannes Uys, a practising GP from London, has identified several nail changes that warrant medical attention. "Many people dismiss changes in their nails as cosmetic issues, but they can actually provide crucial insights into our overall health," explains Dr. Uys.
Specific Symptoms to Watch For
- Vertical ridges: These could indicate a deficiency in iron or B vitamins
- Brittle, splitting nails: Often linked to iron deficiency or thyroid issues
- Spoon-shaped nails: A classic sign of severe iron deficiency
- White spots or lines: May suggest zinc or protein deficiency
- Beau's lines: Horizontal ridges that can signal severe illness or malnutrition
Why These Signs Matter
Vitamin deficiencies, particularly B12 and iron, can have serious consequences if left untreated. "B12 deficiency can lead to neurological problems and severe fatigue, while iron deficiency can cause anaemia and heart complications," warns Dr. Uys.
The NHS recommends that adults should get approximately 1.5 micrograms of vitamin B12 daily, which can be challenging for those following plant-based diets since B12 is primarily found in animal products.
