Tragic Loss of Five-Year-Old Jude Platts to Rapid Meningitis Infection
A five-year-old boy from Liverpool, Jude Platts, has tragically died just 24 hours after being diagnosed with a severe form of meningitis. His family initially believed he had a simple stomach bug, but his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to a heartbreaking outcome.
Initial Symptoms Misinterpreted as Stomach Bug
In December 2025, Jude began vomiting, with no fever or other symptoms, leading his family to assume he had a common stomach bug. However, hours later, he suffered a seizure, prompting an emergency hospital admission. At the hospital, he became paralysed on his left side, initially suggesting a stroke to medical staff.
Diagnosis and Critical Condition
Scans revealed Jude had encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain, and he was diagnosed with streptococcal pneumonia meningitis. This infection affects the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord and can be fatal. Doctors gave him only a 5% chance of survival, noting the infection's aggressive and rapid progression was unusually severe.
Heartbreaking Decision to Withdraw Life Support
Despite medical interventions, Jude showed no response to treatments. Further tests confirmed no brain activity, leading his parents, Sasha and Nathaniel, to make the difficult decision to turn off his life support on New Year's Eve. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.
Jude's Inspiring Life and Rare Condition
Jude was born with a rare chromosome disorder, microdeletion 16p11.2, which affected his mobility and speech. Despite doctors' predictions that he might never walk, he overcame these challenges, becoming a happy and bubbly child with an infectious personality. His brother, Adam Platts, 25, described him as a fighter who could light up any room.

The Platts family is now raising funds to give Jude a memorable send-off, aiming to avoid a generic gravestone and ensure he is properly remembered. They have set up a fundraising page to support these efforts, highlighting their love and dedication to Jude's memory.
