Alan Rickman's Heartbreaking Plea to Doctors After Terminal Cancer Diagnosis
Beloved Harry Potter actor Alan Rickman made a devastating seven-word request to medical professionals upon learning of his terminal cancer diagnosis. The iconic performer, best known for his role as Severus Snape, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 and tragically passed away in January 2016 at the age of 69.
The Shocking Diagnosis and Final Request
In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, Rickman's widow, Rima Horton, revealed the actor's poignant final words to his oncologist. She recounted, "The first thing he ever said to the oncologist was, 'I don't want to die in pain,' and they made sure he didn't." This plea highlights Rickman's desire for comfort during his final weeks, as pancreatic cancer is known for its aggressive nature and low survival rates.
Pancreatic cancer has tragically low survival statistics, with only 22 percent of patients living beyond 30 days after diagnosis. Approximately 62 percent of cases are not identified until stage four, making early detection critical. Rickman's diagnosis in 2015 came as a "tremendous shock" to his family, according to Horton.
Support from Friends and Family
Close friend and Love Actually co-star Emma Thompson played a significant role in ensuring Rickman's final weeks were as comfortable as possible. Horton described how Thompson "created a salon" for Rickman by introducing a standing lamp and soft furnishings to soften the stark hospital environment. This thoughtful gesture aimed to provide a more homely atmosphere during his difficult time.
Rickman also meticulously planned his own funeral, wanting to "say goodbye to his friends" on his own terms. In honour of his iconic portrayal of Severus Snape, Horton is auctioning a collection of Harry Potter books signed by co-stars, including Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, and Rupert Grint. The proceeds will support groundbreaking breath test research at Imperial College London, which could help detect pancreatic cancer earlier and save lives.
Rickman's Reflections on Harry Potter
In his posthumously released journal, Madly, Deeply: The Alan Rickman Diaries, the actor shared his genuine sentiments about the Harry Potter franchise. Before the premiere of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, he expressed feeling "a bit nothing about HP, which really disturbs me." His initial reaction to the first film focused solely on the soundtrack, noting it "acquires a scale and depth that matches the hideous score by John Williams."
Despite his criticisms, Rickman appeared to enjoy the Savoy after-party and later committed to "see it through" the series. He did not hold back on critiquing later entries, including Snape's death scene, which he described as "all a bit epic and Japanese," though he acknowledged that viewers were "very happy."
Emma Thompson's Emotional Tribute
Emma Thompson penned an emotional tribute after Rickman's passing, revealing she kissed him "goodbye" in his final moments. She wrote, "Alan was my friend and so this is hard to write because I have just kissed him goodbye. What I remember most in this moment of painful leave-taking is his humour, intelligence, wisdom and kindness."
Thompson praised Rickman's artistic integrity, noting his "ineffable and cynical wit" and the clarity with which he viewed the world. She added, "I learned a lot from him," highlighting the deep bond they shared both on and off-screen.
Rickman's legacy continues through his work and the charitable efforts in his memory, aiming to advance pancreatic cancer research and support patients facing similar battles.
