Maldivian authorities are intensifying a high-risk search operation for four Italian divers who perished in a deep underwater cave accident, after the body of a fifth diver was recovered on Thursday.
Search Operations Underway
The five divers, including an instructor, were believed to have been exploring the cave when they went missing, according to Maldivian presidential spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef. "The cave is so deep that divers even with the best equipment do not try to approach," he said. Italy's Foreign Ministry confirmed the divers "apparently died while attempting to explore caves at a depth of 50 meters (164 feet)" in the Vaavu Atoll on Thursday, adding that the circumstances of their death remain under investigation.
Recovery Efforts
Maldivian authorities launched a major rescue operation after the incident, deploying boats, aircraft and dive teams to search the area. Rescuers recovered one body from about 60 meters (200 feet) below the surface on Thursday, but a first round of searches failed to locate the remaining four divers, who are thought to be inside the same cave. Search teams are preparing for a second dive on Friday, and the Maldivian government is keeping Italian authorities informed. Italy's ambassador is on a search vessel, and the Maldives may seek international assistance if needed.
The Italian foreign ministry did not provide information on the recovery of bodies. It said an Italian expert is assisting the coast guard and Maldivian vessels in the search operation on Friday. Officials plan a dive to evaluate access to the underwater cave, but rough weather conditions could delay the recovery.
Background of the Incident
The group had been on a morning dive near Alimathaa, and was reported missing after failing to surface by midday Thursday. Conditions were described as unfavorable at the time, with a yellow weather alert in effect. The Italian Embassy is in contact with the victims' families and providing assistance.
