As temperatures rise, many of us embrace summer with outdoor activities, barbecues, and holidays. However, a GP has warned that some seemingly harmless summer habits could be putting our health at serious risk.
The Hidden Dangers of Summer
Dr. Sarah Jarvis, a leading GP, highlights several common behaviours that could have long-term consequences:
- Skipping sunscreen: "Just one blistering sunburn in childhood doubles the risk of melanoma later in life," warns Dr. Jarvis.
- Overindulging in alcohol: Summer parties often lead to excessive drinking, which can cause dehydration and liver damage.
- Ignoring hydration: Many people don't drink enough water in hot weather, risking heat exhaustion.
Protecting Your Health
Dr. Jarvis recommends these simple precautions:
- Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen every two hours
- Limit alcohol intake and alternate with water
- Stay in the shade during peak sun hours (11am-3pm)
- Recognise signs of heatstroke (dizziness, nausea, headache)
"People often think they're invincible in summer," says Dr. Jarvis. "But these small choices can have big impacts on your long-term wellbeing."
