Rare Cloud Jaguar Sighting in Honduras
A cloud jaguar has been captured on camera in the forests of the Sierra del Merendon mountains in Honduras, marking the first sighting in a decade. This image documents the highest elevation at which a cloud jaguar has been recorded in Honduras, providing rare evidence that jaguars are still moving through this high-elevation corridor between Honduras and Guatemala. The sighting is particularly significant given Honduras has one of the highest deforestation rates in Latin America. It suggests that a decade of anti-poaching ranger patrols, conservation investment, and prey reintroduction are showing signs of success, offering hope for the species' survival in the region.
Puffin Rescue and Release in Scotland
Two puffins, named Danny and Arnie, were rescued by the Scottish SPCA after washing up in Fife, UK, following a spell of bad weather. Upon arrival at the National Wildlife Rescue Centre, both birds were emaciated. During their care, it is common for seabirds to lose their waterproofing due to a lack of natural preening, so the team routinely washed and swam them to assess their condition. Once fully waterproof, the centre coordinated with an Isle of May boat tour company to release the pair halfway to the island to avoid predation risks. The dynamic duo were dropped from the boat onto the water and swam away, symbolising a successful rehabilitation effort.
Chimpanzee Civil War in Uganda
In Kibale National Park, Uganda, the world's largest group of chimpanzees, comprising around 500 animals, has split into two factions, leading to a civil war. For two decades, researchers observed the Ngogo chimpanzees living peacefully, but the stable community has now fractured into years of deadly violence. This is the first clearly documented example of a wild chimpanzee group splitting and one faction launching coordinated attacks against the other, shedding light on primate social dynamics and conflict.
