Dog Owners Warned After Fishhook-Laced Treats Found in South Wales Park

Monmouthshire County Council has issued an urgent warning after dog treats containing fishing hooks were discovered along footpaths in Abergavenny. The treats were found at Mill Street, leading to the River Usk, and may also be present in Castle Meadows. Police have been informed and are increasing patrols in the area.

One dog walker reported finding a treat on the path near Linda Vista on the morning of June 27. The walker said the treat resembled common pet snacks and appeared deliberately placed to cause harm. Multiple other walkers have also reported finding similar items.

This is not the first such incident. Earlier this year, a Jack Russell terrier swallowed two fishing hooks embedded in a treat while in Castle Meadows. The dog required emergency veterinary treatment, including an X-ray that revealed the hooks lodged in its stomach. The owner described the hooks as carefully concealed, with the eye hidden in the centre, making accidental ingestion unlikely.

Gwent Police Inspector Emma Sowrey said: "Following this report we will be carrying out patrols in the local area. We would encourage dog owners to be vigilant and if anyone has any information, they can contact the local council or ourselves."

PetMD advises that embedded fishhooks require sedation, minor surgery, or endoscopy for removal. Dog owners in the area are urged to remain cautious and report any suspicious findings.
