Huge recycling centre fire sends smoke across London, halting trains
Massive recycling fire seen for miles across London

A massive fire at a recycling centre in south London sent thick plumes of black smoke visible for miles, bringing rush-hour rail services to a standstill on Monday evening.

Fire disrupts rail services

The blaze erupted at a recycling plant near Landmann Way in Bermondsey around 5.30pm, forcing the closure of all railway lines between London Bridge and Dartford. Commuters at London Bridge reported a strong smell of burning in the area.

Passenger Grace Greenwood, travelling on the 6.10pm service from London Bridge, described the scene: 'The smoke was visible from quite a way before we went past the fire. As we went past there were still large visible flames and firefighters tackling it. It definitely caught the attention of everyone on board.'

Firefighters battle the blaze

Around 100 firefighters were deployed to tackle the fire, which also affected a nearby warehouse unit. Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield, speaking from the scene, said: 'Firefighters are working hard to extinguish a large amount of refuse at a recycling centre. The fire is also affecting a warehouse unit.'

He advised local residents to keep windows and doors closed due to the significant smoke. 'Loose embers have been reported, which is normal during large fires. Residents should pour water on any embers near their properties, but if something catches alight, call 999 immediately.'

Bloomfield added that the incident was likely to be protracted, with crews remaining on scene into the morning.

Impact on travel

A Thameslink spokesperson confirmed that all lines were blocked between London Bridge and Dartford due to the fire near the railway. Normal rail services resumed by Tuesday morning.

The London Fire Brigade reiterated the advice for residents to keep windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke in the area.
