Major Bermondsey Fire Sends Smoke Across London

A significant fire broke out at a recycling centre on Landmann Way in Bermondsey on Monday, sending thick black smoke billowing across parts of London and causing major disruption to rail services. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that 15 fire engines and approximately 100 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, with two 32-metre turntable ladders deployed to combat the flames from above.

Firefighting Efforts and Public Safety

Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield described the incident as "likely to be a protracted one," with crews remaining on site into Tuesday morning. The LFB advised local residents to keep windows and doors closed due to the significant smoke. Loose embers were also reported, which is normal during large fires; residents were advised to pour water on them if concerned but to call 999 if they ignite anything.

The fire was brought under control shortly before midnight, and no injuries have been reported. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Eyewitness Accounts

Dramatic accounts emerged from commuters traveling past the scene. One passenger described their train filling with smoke as it passed the blaze, with windows becoming extremely hot and some passengers screaming. Another commuter, Oliver Kane, who was on a Southeastern service from London Charing Cross to Maidstone East, reported that more than half of the building appeared engulfed in flames, causing a delay of around 30 minutes.

Rail Disruption

National Rail confirmed that train services remained disrupted, with lines blocked and trains to and from London Bridge cancelled, revised, or diverted. Southeastern urged passengers to check before traveling and consider delaying journeys. Services on the Hastings line were starting and terminating at Tonbridge, while other trains were diverted to London Victoria.
