UK couple's £300k eco-home now costs nothing to run
Eco-home costs nothing to run after £300k build

A couple in Dorset have achieved a near-zero cost of living after building a spectacular off-grid eco-home for over £300,000. With solar panels and natural water purification, their regular outgoings are minimal.

How the eco-home works

YouTuber David Burnip visited Alex Reeves, who constructed the home from scratch using reclaimed timber, stained glass, and extensive solar panels. The property is entirely self-sufficient, with no connection to mains electricity, gas, or water.

Alex explained that the solar system powers all appliances, including a washing machine, fridge-freezer, and an LED skylight. He started with a basic system from Maplin and upgraded to lithium-ion batteries after using old car batteries.

Challenges and solutions

Obtaining planning permission took eight years, but skilled tradespeople helped build the home. Doors and windows were sourced from eBay and reclamation yards. In winter, solar power is limited, so Alex uses log burners and a propane oven.

A natural stream cools drinks, and a root cellar dug in 30 minutes with a mini-digger stores food. The water purification system uses reed beds, linked to Alex's aquatic plants business.

The land cost £103,000, and Alex grows much of his own produce. Despite being off-grid, he runs a website for his business and is always working on new projects.
