Dog Owners Reveal Perfect Walk Features and Best UK Routes

A survey of 1,800 dog owners has revealed what makes the perfect dog walk: open fields, woodland or parks, with opportunities to sniff lamp posts, tree trunks and flowers, and encounters with around three other dogs along the way.

The research, commissioned by Animal Friends Pet Insurance, found that 38% of owners prioritise their dog's enjoyment over their own. Safety was a key concern for 55%, while 37% prefer quiet, uncrowded routes and 36% want wide open spaces for their pet to run freely.

Key factors for choosing a walk

Convenience plays a major role: 33% of owners choose routes close to home with easy access to bins. However, 46% admitted to growing tired of the same old walks, and 30% believe their dog feels the same. Eight in ten owners confessed to feeling guilty about not being more adventurous with their pets.

Owners said they would travel an average of seven miles from home for the perfect outing, and are more likely to opt for routes near dog-friendly cafes that offer water and treats. Weather conditions (61%), the temperature of the ground under their dog's paws (61%), and the likelihood of encountering other dogs and livestock (48%) were also key considerations before heading out.

Confidence and hazards

While 36% of owners felt fully confident in their ability to spot and avoid hazards like steep terrain, coastal dangers and livestock, 56% said they were only fairly confident.

Jen Hipwell, head of veterinary services at Animal Friends Pet Insurance, said: “Walks are one of the best parts of life with a dog - a chance to spend time together, explore somewhere new and make the most of the summer safely. Every dog is different, so a great day out will look different depending on their age, breed, health, personality and confidence.”

Top UK destinations

The top three destinations dog owners most want to visit are the Lake District, New Forest National Park in Hampshire, and the South West Coast Path. The insurance company has created a map of the UK’s best dog walking routes to help owners find walks that offer space and stimulation.

Hipwell added: “Before heading out, it's always worth checking your route in advance, as well as the weather and any local conditions that could affect your plans, particularly during periods of hot weather. Pack for your dog's needs, whether that's plenty of fresh water, treats, a lead, a favourite toy or somewhere comfortable to rest. The map has been designed to help owners find a walk that suits their dog, so they can enjoy exploring somewhere new safely and confidently.”
