Perfect dog walk lasts 67 minutes with 16 sniffs and water, survey finds

Dog owners have defined the perfect outing for their pet: a walk lasting 67 minutes, featuring 16 sniffing opportunities and a chance to splash in water. A survey of 1,800 owners conducted by OnePoll.com for Animal Friends Pet Insurance found that the ideal walk takes place in open fields, woodlands or parks, with sniffs at lamp posts, tree trunks and flowers, and the chance to meet around three other dogs.

Owner priorities and safety

Some 38% of owners said their dog's enjoyment mattered more than their own. However, many prioritised safety: 55% prefer walks where their dog will be safe, 37% like it quiet and not crowded, and 36% want wide open spaces. Convenience also matters: 33% favour routes close to home or with bins. Over a quarter (46%) admitted boredom with the same walks, and 30% believe their dog feels the same. Eight in ten have felt guilty about not being more adventurous.

Willingness to travel

Owners are willing to travel an average of seven miles from home for a fantastic outing. They are more likely to choose a walk near dog-friendly cafes offering water and treats. Before heading out, they check weather conditions (61%), ground temperature for paws (61%), and the chance of encountering other dogs or livestock (48%).

Top destinations and advice

The most desired destinations are the Lake District, New Forest National Park in Hampshire, and the South West Coast Path in Devon and Cornwall. The insurance company has created a map of the UK’s best dog walking routes. Jen Hipwell, head of veterinary services at Animal Friends, said: “Walks are one of the best parts of life with a dog - a chance to spend time together, explore somewhere new and make the most of the summer safely. Every dog is different, so a great day out will look different depending on their age, breed, health, personality and confidence.” She added: “Before heading out, it's always worth checking your route in advance, as well as the weather and any local conditions that could affect your plans, particularly during periods of hot weather. Pack for your dog's needs, whether that's plenty of fresh water, treats, a lead, a favourite toy or somewhere comfortable to rest.”
