A binman has issued a crucial warning to households during the current hot weather: do not leave your food waste bin in direct sunlight. Ashley, a 37-year-old waste collector from South-East England who shares tips as a self-described 'bin-fluencer,' says the simple change can prevent unpleasant consequences.
Why Shade Matters for Food Waste Bins
In a video that has garnered more than 8,000 views, Ashley explains that leaving food waste bins in the sun for a whole week causes them to 'cook,' leading to intense smells, maggots, flies, and even rats. He emphasizes that this is not just about bin day, but about where the bin sits in your garden between collections.
Ashley advises placing the bin under a bush, a table, a chair, or even under children's play equipment. 'If you can't put it in the shade outside your house, find some shade in your garden,' he says. He also suggests covering the bin with a towel over a chair to block the sun.
Viewers Share Their Struggles
The video prompted dozens of responses. One viewer wrote, 'Help. I've double bagged everything and it's been sitting in the shade and it still smells.' Another person expressed concern for bin workers: 'Hope you and all the other bin people keep cool in this heat.'
A commenter noted the difficulty with large wheelie bins: 'Its a big wheelie bin. It's a bit hard to keep it in shade, I can't wheel it round to other side of house when sun moves around either.' Some found the advice obvious, with one saying, 'Isn't that common sense?' Another lightheartedly added, 'I put six fish heads in the food bin on Sunday, full sun, can't wait for the bin men on Friday, looks like an alien now.'
Impact of Ignoring the Advice
Ashley warns that maggots can remain in the bin even after emptying, and trapped flies and rats may follow. 'It's not just for my benefit, it's for yours as well. If you can do that, everyone will be happier,' he concludes.
