With scorching temperatures across the Mediterranean this summer, many travelers are seeking cooler destinations further north. Mountain getaways and outdoor adventures have become popular, but overcrowding on trails in the Dolomites and Alps has prompted a search for calmer spots. Nestled between Italy and Austria, Slovenia has been ranked among the top 10 safest countries in the world by the Global Peace Index. It is also a prime hub for adventure travel, particularly the Julian Alps region in the northwest.
Activities in the Soca Valley and Beyond
There are numerous activities available around the Soca Valley, from whitewater rafting to relaxing walks along the trails of Tolmin Gorge, where visitors can learn about local folk stories and history. The guides at the visitor center are enthusiastic and passionate about the region, making the experience infectious.
For longer excursions, the 270-kilometer, 16-day Juliana Trail around Triglav National Park offers stops in small medieval towns and lakeside resort towns. If kayaking or paddleboarding isn't appealing, a boat ride on Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest lake, provides panoramic views of the Savica Waterfall and surrounding mountains. The 30-minute one-way journey (or one-hour round trip with a 10-minute stop) is a must.
Local Cuisine and Accommodation
Away from adventure, visitors can enjoy locally grown seasonal cuisine, wines from three Slovenian wine regions, and boutique hotels like Sunrose 7 in Bohinj Bistrica, a digital detox hotel, or Triangel Boutique Hotel in the Upper Sava Valley, which features a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant.
A Slower Pace of Life
Unlike other European mountain regions, the Julian Alps operate at a slower pace. There is a genuine appreciation for nature, and being outdoors is part of daily culture. Locals greet hikers on trails, help with directions, and even invite solo hikers to paraglide. This community vibe enhances safety and allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the experience.
Getting to Slovenia
To reach the Julian Alps, travelers can fly from the UK to Ljubljana or to Trieste, Italy, from London airports. From there, car rental or public transport connects to hubs like Bled or Bohinj.
This trip was made possible by the Slovenian Tourist Board and the Julian Alps collection of regional tourism boards.
