Rescuers Save Dog Who Ate Cannabis on Ben Nevis

Mountain rescuers have saved an unconscious dog that collapsed after eating discarded cannabis half way up Ben Nevis. Owner Christina Bluhme was making the 4,413ft ascent of Ben Nevis with black labrador Tokyo when the normally fit working dog suddenly became ill.

Dog's Sudden Collapse

Christine said: “She quickly lost the use of her legs, drifted in and out of consciousness, and I genuinely thought I was going to lose her.” Tokyo had to be carried to safety on a stretcher by 14 volunteers from Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team.

Owner's Gratitude

Danish dog trainer Christina, who lives in Esher, Surrey, added: “Without the incredible Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, there is simply no way I could have got her safely off the mountain. Carrying a 25kg Labrador down Ben Nevis was impossible on my own, and their kindness, professionalism and calm support meant everything during one of the most frightening days I’ve ever experienced.”

Recovery and Warning

Tokyo was rushed to a veterinary hospital, where she made a remarkable full recovery by the following day. Christina said: “We feel incredibly lucky. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone at Lochaber Mountain Rescue and to the veterinary team who cared for Tokyo.” She added: “A little reminder to fellow dog owners – please be aware that discarded drugs and other toxic substances can sometimes be found even in the most beautiful outdoor places. It was something I never imagined we would encounter.”

Rescue Team's Response

Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team’s deputy team leader Astie Cameron said: “Following a request to assist a collapsed dog on Sunday, we’re pleased to confirm that Tokyo has made a full recovery after being cared for at Crown Vets in Fort William.”
