Fire crews are battling a large fire on the hillside above Conwy, prompting warnings for local residents to keep windows and doors shut. The blaze, located on Conwy Mountain and the Sychnant Pass area, has generated thick smoke visible from miles around.
Emergency Response and Road Closure
North Wales Police and multiple fire crews from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service are at the scene. A police spokesperson said: "The road is currently closed on Conwy Old Road, Dwygyfylchi, due to a fire. Additionally, can local residents please keep all doors and windows closed for the time being."
The incident began early on July 12, 2026, following a spell of hot, dry weather that increased fire risk. Traffic Wales also issued a driving warning for the area.
Smoke Spreads Across Region
Residents have reported smelling smoke as far away as Bangor and Anglesey, as winds carry the haze across a wide area. Images from the scene, shared by photographer Gabrielle Dickinson and pilot Nick Laundy, show the fierce blaze from the air. Other pictures, courtesy of Aaran Lennox, illustrate smoke billowing towards Anglesey, with crews working to protect nearby homes.
Mark Law, staying on Sychnant Pass, provided additional images showing the scale of the firefighting challenge. Ian Davies also shared a picture highlighting the difficult terrain crews face.
Official Warnings and Ongoing Efforts
North Wales Fire and Rescue Service stated: "We are aware of the incident on Conwy Mountain. If you are local close all windows and doors. Thank you." Firefighters remain on the mountain actively tackling the blaze, with no immediate reports of injuries or property damage.
