Fish and chip shops across the UK are bracing for a new challenge as rising costs push the average price of a fish and chip meal to £11.41. Owners warn that portion sizes may be reduced to keep prices "pretty reasonable" for customers.
Rising Costs and Portion Cuts
The price increase is driven by soaring energy prices and a halt on Russian-caught fish imports. Jon Long, owner of a chip shop in Wimborne, Dorset, told the BBC: "We have been hit by energy prices as all in hospitality have and it's not just hospitality, it's everybody's pockets have been hit by it." He added that over 50% of the fish coming into the UK was Russian caught, which has now stopped, and tariffs have been imposed on fish imports.
Impact on the Industry
Long, who recently reopened a second shop in Wareham, believes there is a future for the industry if costs can be managed. "I think we've got to manage our costs well," he said. Industry body Seafish reports there are approximately 7,210 fish and chip shops operating across the UK.
Best Chippie in the Country
According to the National Fish & Chip Awards 2026, the best fish and chip shop in the UK is located in Yorkshire, known locally as "God's Own Country." Despite the challenges, the classic British dish remains a staple, though owners warn that ongoing cost pressures may lead to further adjustments in portion sizes and pricing.
