Keep Flying Ants Out with 85p Cinnamon This July

Flying Ant Day 2026 is expected to arrive earlier than usual, driven by scorching temperatures across the UK. While the event is not confined to a single day but spans several weeks, experts predict the peak will occur between 7 July and 20 July, with the highest likelihood in the second or third week of July. In some cases, swarms may appear as late as early August.

What Is Flying Ant Day?

The phenomenon occurs when ants release their winged males and queens to reproduce and establish new colonies. Swarming en masse helps protect them from predators. While flying ants can be beneficial by eating other pests, many gardeners prefer to keep them at bay.

The 85p Kitchen Item That Repels Ants

A simple, cost-effective deterrent is cinnamon, which can be bought in powder form for as little as 85p in some supermarkets. According to Diamond Pest Control, cinnamon works by deterring ants through two mechanisms: ants cannot tolerate the smell, and inhaling the spice can suffocate them. The company advises sprinkling cinnamon along ant trails, near cracks, and around entry points.

Where to Apply Cinnamon

Beyond the lawn, cinnamon can be used on external windowsills and frames, exterior door thresholds, around air bricks and external vents, patio dining areas, and in and around flower pots. Essential oil company Edens Garden describes cinnamon as "the first and most potent remedy for an ant issue." At high concentrations, it acts as an insecticide and can disrupt ants' pheromone trails.

Avoid Squashing Ants

Good Housekeeping warns against squashing ants, as this releases a warning pheromone that attracts more ants. Instead, they recommend vacuuming them up. Adam Juson, founder of Merlin Environmental, told Good Housekeeping: "For 2026, the timing looks set to be earlier than usual. The most statistically likely window for Flying Ant Day 2026 is between 7 July and 20 July, with the peak most often falling in the second or third week of July. Expect flying ants from mid-July, sooner in cities and southern regions, and prepare accordingly."

Heatwave Impact

The UK experienced an unprecedented heatwave in June, with temperatures peaking at 37.7°C, and another bout of scorching weather is currently underway. This has accelerated the emergence of flying ants, making early preparation key for gardeners.
