Invictus Games at Risk of Cancellation Amid Funding Woes

The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry for wounded, injured, or sick military personnel and veterans, is reportedly on the brink of cancellation due to severe funding shortfalls. A source speaking on the Daily Expresso podcast revealed that the event, scheduled for July 2027 in Birmingham, may not go ahead unless significant sponsorship is secured.

Funding Crisis Emerges

According to podcast host JJ Anisiobi, the Invictus Games have traditionally relied on sponsorship, but for the Birmingham edition, funding has shifted to majority reliance on the host country. The UK government has underwritten £26 million for the event, but only £3 million has been released so far. The remaining funds are contingent on the Invictus Games raising enough money independently to proceed.

Anisiobi stated: "The UK has underwritten £26m for next year's Invictus Games. But they will only release that money if Invictus raise enough money for them to go ahead. Currently, the UK government has given them approximately £3m of that underwritten £26m, which means Invictus have got to raise a lot of money between now and next year for the games to go ahead in its entirety."

Sponsor Withdrawals

Major sponsors have pulled out, exacerbating the financial strain. Boeing, a previous key sponsor, has withdrawn its support. Anisiobi noted: "Boeing, massive, huge company, not a company short of a few bob, they pulled out... that's one huge sponsor already out." The organisers are now approaching local Birmingham businesses for funding, a departure from previous high-profile partners like Jaguar.

Presenter and comedian Mark Dolan commented on the severity of the situation: "This is a nightmare on wheels. This is catastrophic. And the reason why is this is all he's got... Invictus is Harry, Harry is Invictus."

Prince Harry's UK Visit

Prince Harry is currently in the UK to launch the official "One Year to Go" countdown for the games. He attended an Invictus Games Foundation event at Chatham House in London on Tuesday, July 7, where he delivered a speech emphasising the event's importance. He is also scheduled to travel to Birmingham for countdown celebrations.

However, his fundraising efforts have so far been unsuccessful, casting doubt on the games' future. Harry travelled alone to the UK, without his wife Meghan Markle and their children Archie and Lilibet, due to ongoing security disputes. His arrival coincided with the High Court rejecting his privacy lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Ltd.

Prince Harry's team has been approached for comment but has not yet responded.
