Freeview users are facing another week of potential TV disruption as a band of high pressure settles over the UK, with effects lasting until Monday, July 20. The ongoing heatwave has already caused signal issues in recent months, and the latest weather pattern is expected to bring glitchy pictures and low-quality images for viewers across parts of the country.
High Pressure Causes Signal Interference
According to Freeview, the disruption is due to high pressure weather conditions that can interfere with TV signals. From Tuesday, July 14 to Sunday, July 19, 2026, viewers may experience picture break-up or loss of signal. The BBC explains that high pressure can create layers in the air that act like a mirror, bending TV and radio signals in unusual ways. This causes signals from far-away transmitters to mix with local signals, leading to reception problems.
“Freeview viewers across parts of the UK could see some disruption to their TV reception from Tuesday 14th July to Sunday 19th July 2026. This is due to high pressure weather conditions which could disrupt the TV signals which Freeview uses,” a Freeview spokesperson said.
Advice for Affected Viewers
If you are experiencing poor TV reception, especially during the upcoming World Cup action, the BBC advises against retuning your TV or radio. “Please do not retune your TV or radio. Retuning will not fix weather-related problems, and on a TV it can make things worse by removing channels that were working before,” the BBC added.
Once the high pressure moves away after Monday, signals are expected to return to normal. Freeview users are encouraged to wait out the disruption rather than attempting any fixes.
