Extreme Wildfire Risk Alert for UK This Weekend

Authorities have issued urgent warnings as parts of Scotland brace for an “extreme” and “very high” risk of wildfire over the coming days, following a period of dry weather. A warning of a very high risk of wildfire in western Scotland came into force on Thursday and will escalate to an “extreme” risk alert from Friday until Sunday. Meanwhile, central and eastern Scotland will face a very high risk of wildfire warning from Friday until Sunday.

Public Urged to Avoid Outdoor Fires

In response, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Wildfire Forum have called on the public to refrain from lighting outdoor fires in the affected areas. Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Kenny Barbour, the fire service head of prevention and chairman of the forum, emphasised the potential consequences.

“Wildfires have the potential to destroy property, landscapes and wildlife, which is why it is so important that members of the public use extreme caution under these conditions,” Barbour said. “People living in the impacted areas should avoid lighting outdoor fires and be mindful that one spark can spread, causing a large amount of damage. Remember, there’s no such thing as a harmless fire.”

How to Stay Safe

Barbour urged the public to share wildfire warnings with family, friends, and visitors. “If anyone spots a large outdoor fire, please report it immediately by calling 999, providing your location, and any other relevant information so we can respond quickly,” he added.

The warnings come after wildfires burned for several days in the north of Scotland in 2025, highlighting the devastating impact such fires can have. With dry conditions persisting, authorities stress the importance of vigilance and responsible behaviour to prevent further incidents.
