Dog owners are being warned about a common feeding mistake during warm weather that could put their pets at risk. While many are aware of the dangers of overheating, feeding habits can become a hidden problem during a heatwave.
Wet Food Must Be Removed After 20 Minutes
According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), wet dog food should not be left out for more than 20 minutes in hot weather. Higher temperatures encourage bacteria to multiply more quickly, increasing the risk of food becoming unsafe for dogs to eat. The AKC advises owners to remove any uneaten food after this time and throw it away rather than storing it for later. Dog bowls should also be washed regularly to prevent bacteria from building up between meals.
RSPCA Recommendations for Pet Safety
The RSPCA also recommends taking extra care with pets during warmer weather, including ensuring fresh drinking water is always available and avoiding leaving food exposed in direct sunlight. The charity says animals can be more vulnerable to heat-related illness during periods of high temperatures. Dry food generally lasts longer than wet food once served, but owners are still advised to store it properly in a cool, dry place. Animal health experts warn heat and humidity can affect freshness and encourage bacterial growth if food is left exposed for long periods.
Health Risks of Spoiled Food
Dogs that eat spoiled food can suffer from symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach upset. Puppies, older dogs and those with existing health conditions may be particularly vulnerable if they consume contaminated food. Alongside safe feeding habits, owners are encouraged to keep pets cool by providing constant access to fresh water, offering plenty of shade and avoiding walks during the hottest part of the day. The RSPCA also warns never to leave dogs in parked cars, even briefly, as temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly.
With temperatures expected to remain high, removing uneaten food after around 20 minutes is a simple step owners can take to help protect their pets. Combined with sensible heatwave precautions, it can help keep dogs safe and comfortable throughout the summer.
